IMAGINATIVE SOLUTIONS

The Peninsula Hotels Group is iconic in Asia. When the Group decided to launch a spa division and add spas to all of their hotels world-wide they called in ESPA to develop the concept. Laura Boss led the design initiative prior to founding Twig.

The Hong Kong flagship opened in 1928 and had nowhere left to build. Fortunately, the office tower next door shared the same ownership and we were able to connect through to it at the hotel’s fitness level tying the existing hotel pool, gym and changing rooms to a new spa reception located in the tower. An internal spa elevator whisks guests up a level to an office floor converted to heat experiences, relaxation zones and treatment areas.

Sophisticated illusion is important in Chinese cuisine and we took a page from that menu to inform the concept of this award winning spa. The windows overlooking a busy street were masked by misty bamboo “gardens” and a tea house inside a “ring of rain” serves as the spa’s central waiting area. This accomplished design by Chhada Siembieda Leung is suffused with a relaxing sense of nature in a place where none actually exists.
